Abstract:

4 original editorial cartoon drawings by Charles Nelan executed for the New York Herald between 1898 and 1904. Nos. 1 and 2 comment on matters pertaining to the Spanish-American War, namely the inadequate health care provided by the U.S. to its soldiers, and the reconcilation of the U.S. North and South by England (personified as the John Bull character) in the common effort of war. No. 3 comments on Theodore Roosevelt's effort to gain control of the construction of the Panama Canal. No. 4 refers to the United States Treasury's doling of funds to banks and bankers (two of which are identified as "Heath" and "Stillman"). The Uncle Sam character appears in 3 of the drawings
